Last spring, a woman in our village asked if I made t-shirt quilts and although I never had, I told her I’d be excited to try. She took a chance on me knowing I had experience quilting and VOILA! 5 months later I can now say I am a confident t-shirt quilter. These shirts were worn by her now toddler in the first years of his life. They are so precious and were so nerve wracking to cut into. Even though they aren’t the clothes of my own child, it was very scary to take that first cut.

When my client asked for the quilt, she was hoping for a full size to fit her son’s new bed. It sounded unrealistic to me to have so many teeny tiny baby clothes to make a full size quilt, but even without the borders, this quilt nearly got there on its own. At the time of the request her son’s favorite color was yellow but when it was time to start bordering the t-shirts his favorite color had changed to red. Knowing my own child’s ever-changing favorite color du jour, I asked if borders using all primary colors (which my son corrected that primary colors are only red, blue, yellow, and I used rainbow colors) would work for borders and she agreed.

Bordering colors are Ruby Star Society Speckled

Thread is a mix of Superior Threads King Tut Desert Wind for top quilting, King Tut Cheery Red for back quilting and Masterpiece Canvas for piecing.
